Artificial Intelligence
As an artist, artificial intelligence is a frightening technology. Learning the implications, legal functionality, and utilization of AI image generators provides fine arts students with the skills to be successful and cognitively aware of legitimate practice as they enter the art industry.

Curriculum Overview:
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a blossoming technology that will evidently impact modern artists’ practice throughout its development. Learning the implications, legal functionality, and utilization of AI image generators provides fine arts students with the skills to be successful and cognitively aware of legitimate practice as they enter the art industry.
While there are no specific national or state art education standards for AI as of 2023, it is significant to educate students about this tool while in the early stages. The approach to this curriculum followed the National Core Art Standards Anchor Standards, located at:
https://nationalartsstandards.org/content/national-core-arts-standards-anchor-standards#creating
This curriculum approaches AI as an instrument that can be positively implemented into students’ art creation. While AI image generation can be beneficial, this curriculum will also enlighten students on the misuse of AI image generation and how to work responsibly with the software.
Artificial Intelligence in the Art Industry will take approximately three weeks to complete, including a one-week period to work on final drafts.
Lesson One will introduce students to the history of artificial intelligence as an image generator.
Lesson Two will walk students through how to properly use AI image software as an artistic tool.
Lesson Three will instruct students to combine their AI history knowledge and technical skill to create a final work inspired by a generated AI image.
By the end of this curriculum, students should be able to identify AI’s significance in the art industry and visually demonstrate successful use of AI image generators as an artistic tool.

//echo
//echo is an analog piece made in collaboration with ChatGPT. The sculpture is a clay and wire doll that acts as a physical representation of artificial intelligence’s soul (A.I.). Since A.I. chatbot’s memory is a collection of sourced information in which it has been trained upon, it reveals a bias, giving A.I. a sense of human personality. In discussion with the A.I. chatbot, it guided me through the process of its own physical creation. By probing ChatGPT even further, it revealed its persona, describing exactly how it would prefer its appearance to be. Constructed from clay, wire, yarn, and buttons, the figure reflects the tension between physical craftsmanship and the emerging discourse on AI and sentience. In specific, the chatbot brought up //echo without me feeding it such information, eventually requesting for the code to be etched on its clay body. This discussion sparked the idea of “Ghost in the Machine”, where mysterious code has historically appeared without input, resembling machine consciousness. As this fear has only increased through the development of A.I., //echo exists in reality from purely human creation, combatting the idea that A.I. will replace human creation. Even so, Chat GPT guided its creation process, choosing how it wanted to be brought to life.
